What's Really Happening to the Church — and Why It's Not All Bad News

I've been in enough conversations lately with pastors and leaders around the world to know something's shifting. You can feel it.From the States to Sydney, from London to Lagos, everyone's saying it in one way or another:
- "Mega isn't what it used to be."
- "People want something more local, more relational."
- "And attendance? It's just not what it was before COVID."
So what's really happening?
Is the Church in decline?
Are people walking away from faith?
Or is God actually doing something new—something deeper, more authentic, more Kingdom?
Maybe you've been asking these questions yourself. Maybe you've been part of a church that felt more like a crowd than a community. Maybe you're wondering if there's something more.
Let me tell you—there is.
What Really Happened During COVID
Here's the truth: church attendance didn't start falling because of COVID. The decline has been underway for decades across the Western world. The pandemic didn't cause the problem—it simply exposed it and accelerated what was already there.
But something else happened too.
When the world shut down in 2020, people didn't just lose the habit of going to church—they lost the rhythm of gathering, connecting, and belonging. The Sunday routine was disrupted. And for many, that habit had been the main thing keeping them connected.
When the buildings reopened, not everyone came back. But here's what's interesting: many who did come back came back different.
They came back with questions. With hunger. With a desire for something more real, more raw, more relational than what they'd experienced before. They weren't content to sit in rows and consume a religious product. They wanted to be part of a family. They wanted their faith to intersect with their real lives.
While the crowd got smaller, the core got stronger.
And honestly? That's not collapse. That's reformation.
What People Are Actually Looking For
If you're reading this, you might be one of those people. You might be searching for something authentic. Something real. Somewhere you can actually belong.
You're not alone.
Across the Western world, recent surveys show a fascinating pattern. Yes, overall attendance is down. But among those who are attending church, about one in five now attend more frequently than before COVID. And a significant number of people currently in church joined their congregation in just the past few years.
People haven't stopped searching for God. They've just stopped settling for something that feels empty.
Here's what we're hearing over and over:
"I don't want to be a number in a crowd. I want to be known."
"I'm tired of performance. I want to encounter God's presence."
"I need community that's real—not just a Sunday service I attend and leave."
"I want my faith to make a difference in the world around me."
Does any of that resonate with you?
The Three Things Driving This Shift
Let's get practical for a moment. Why is all this happening? Why are people looking for something different?
1. We Can't Go Back to "Just Habit"
For generations, churchgoing was a default setting in Western culture. You went because it's what people did. But COVID broke that rhythm. And once habits are disrupted, they don't automatically come back.
What used to be a routine now has to be a relationship.
This is why churches built primarily on habit and obligation are struggling. But churches built on genuine relationships, mission, and spiritual depth are finding people still show up—because they're coming not out of duty, but because they've encountered something real.
2. Digital Isn't Enough
During the pandemic, everyone went online. And we learned something important: digital connection is real, but it's not sufficient.
You can't do genuine community through a screen. You can't experience the sacraments digitally. You can't hug someone, serve together, or break bread together online.
The churches thriving today have figured out how to integrate both. They use online ministry as a way to connect with people initially, but they always invite people into embodied community. Because that's where real transformation happens—face-to-face, life-on-life.
3. People Are Hungry for Home
The world feels fragmented right now. Anxiety, loneliness, and cultural confusion are everywhere. Mental health challenges are at all-time highs. Political polarization has fractured families and friendships.
People feel unmoored, unsure, overwhelmed.
And in the midst of all that, people aren't looking for hype—they're looking for home.
They're looking for a place where they're known and loved.
They're looking for a community that offers stability and truth in a shifting world.
They're looking for meaning that transcends the chaos.
They're looking for mission that gives their lives purpose.
You can't consume your way into meaning. You have to belong your way in.
What God Might Be Saying in All This
Here's where it gets exciting.
What if this isn't decline at all? What if it's design?
Maybe God is reshaping His Church to look more like His Kingdom. Maybe He's shaking off the excess—the consumerism, the celebrity, the convenience—and calling us back to simplicity, community, and power.
Think about the early Church. They didn't depend on crowds; they depended on connection.
They met house to house. They broke bread together. They prayed together. They discipled one another. They shared everything in common. They cared for widows and orphans. They lived sent lives in their neighborhoods, workplaces, and marketplaces.
They were known not for their Sunday services, but for their radical love and their willingness to lay down their lives for one another and for the world.
And they multiplied. Explosively.
Not because they had great buildings or polished programs. But because they had the presence of God, the power of the Spirit, and authentic community that the watching world couldn't ignore.
Could it be that the Spirit is bringing us back to that pattern—smaller, deeper, and more missional?
Because the Kingdom never depended on attendance numbers. It thrives wherever disciples live on mission.
What We're Building at Awake Nations
If you've read this far, it's probably because something in your heart is resonating with this message. You're looking for something different. Something real. Somewhere you can actually belong and grow.
That's exactly what we're building here at Awake Nations.
We're not trying to be the biggest church—we're trying to be the most authentic and missional community we can be. We're a family on mission together, and we're intentional about creating the kind of environment where people can truly encounter God and one another.
Here's What That Looks Like:
Deep Relationships, Not Just Programs
We gather as family, not as an audience. You won't get lost in a crowd here. From your first Sunday, people will welcome you by name, invite you for coffee, and genuinely want to know your story. We believe discipleship happens best in the context of real relationships—not in the rows of an auditorium, but around tables, in living rooms, and in everyday life together.
Presence Over Performance
We're not about slick production or entertainment. We're after the manifest presence of God. Our Sunday gatherings are Spirit-led and authentic. Yes, we worship with excellence and teach the Word with depth—but we're not performing for you. We're encountering Jesus together. Expect the unexpected. Expect the Holy Spirit to move. Expect transformation.
Everyone Gets to Play
We don't believe in spectator Christianity. You're not called to just sit and consume—you're called to discover your gifts, step into your calling, and make a Kingdom impact. Whether you're brand new to faith or you've been walking with Jesus for decades, there's a place for you to contribute, to serve, to grow, and to lead.
Local Mission That Actually Matters
We're not just meeting on Sundays and calling it good. We're living on mission throughout the week—bringing Heaven to Earth in our neighborhoods, workplaces, and everyday lives. We serve our community tangibly. We pray for the sick. We reach out to the lost. We're committed to seeing the Sunshine Coast transformed by the Gospel.
Discipleship That Goes Deep
We're not interested in shallow faith or surface-level Christianity. We want to help you become a fully devoted follower of Jesus who knows the Word, walks in the Spirit, hears God's voice, and lives with Kingdom authority. Through small groups, mentoring relationships, and intentional spiritual formation, we're building disciples who can go make disciples.
Apostolic and Fivefold Ministry
We're not a one-man show. We believe God designed the Church to function with all five ministry gifts—apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers—working together to equip and empower every believer. You'll be equipped, released, and empowered to step into everything God has called you to be.
This Could Be Your Home
Maybe you've been hurt by church in the past. Maybe you've felt overlooked, used, or burned out.
Maybe you've been searching for community and kept coming up empty.
Maybe you're just starting to explore faith and you're not sure where you fit.
Maybe you're a seasoned believer who's hungry for more—more depth, more authenticity, more mission.
Wherever you're coming from, there's a place for you here.
We're not perfect. We're not pretending to have it all figured out. We're a group of imperfect people pursuing a perfect Savior together. We're learning, growing, stumbling, and rising again. We're family.
And we'd love to welcome you in.
What Happens When You Visit
If you decide to visit us on a Sunday morning, here's what you can expect:
Genuine Welcome
From the moment you walk in, you'll be greeted warmly. We'll point you to coffee, answer any questions, and make sure you feel comfortable. No pressure, no awkwardness—just authentic hospitality.
Powerful Worship
We worship with passion and freedom. You'll experience both traditional hymns reimagined and contemporary worship songs—all focused on encountering Jesus and declaring His worth.
Biblical Teaching
You'll hear the Word of God taught with clarity, depth, and practical application. We're committed to sound doctrine and Spirit-led revelation. You'll leave with something you can actually apply to your life.
Room for the Spirit
We don't rush through a program. We make space for the Holy Spirit to move. That might mean extended worship, prophetic ministry, prayer for healing, or simply lingering in God's presence. We follow His lead.
Connection Opportunities
After the service, hang around for coffee. Meet people. Ask questions. We'll invite you to connect further through small groups, serve opportunities, or just grabbing lunch together.
The Future Isn't Mega or Micro—It's Missional
Here's what I believe with everything in me:
The best days of the Church aren't behind us. They're ahead.
God is doing something new. He's calling His people back to simplicity, authenticity, and power. He's raising up communities that look less like corporations and more like families. Less like audiences and more like armies. Less like institutions and more like movements.
This is the Church Jesus imagined: not a building full of spectators, but a movement of Spirit-filled disciples bringing Heaven to Earth in everyday life.
And you get to be part of it.
Maybe the crowd is smaller than it used to be—but the call is clearer.
Maybe we've left the stadiums—but we've returned to the streets.
Maybe the future won't be measured in seating capacity—but in sending capacity.
How many disciples are we making?
How many leaders are we raising up?
How many neighborhoods are being transformed?
How many people are encountering the Kingdom?
Those are the metrics that matter. And that's what we're building here.
